It handles so well in low light it's also a favorite in our best cameras for low light photography guide. Thanks to its enormous 61-megapixel sensor, the Sony A7R IV can capture even the most minor details in poor lighting, making it an excellent camera for astrophotography, and many other types of photography, for that matter. For landscape photographers, studio portraits, or professional wedding photography, this is a fantastic choice. □ Sony A7R IV: Despite the big price tag, this is an incredible camera in a class of its own. It's certainly an investment, but for the amount of tech you get, we think it's worth every cent and will last for years. ![]() It's incredibly detailed but also combines tilt screens with fully articulating screens, meaning you can achieve quite literally any angle you want to while still keeping the screen away from the ports on the side of the camera. We were able to clean them up quite nicely in editing software, which is fine for the occasional astro image, but this would likely get tedious and time-consuming if you shoot a lot of astrophotography.Īnother feature we loved was the 4-axis, multi-angle LCD screen. For astro, though, we did find the images to be quite noisy (which we expected with a 61MP sensor). In our Sony A7R V review, we were able to shoot handheld at ISO 100 at 1/3 second and our image was clean and sharp. It also has 8 stops of image stabilization, which we found completely came into its own when shooting in low light. It features a new AI-based autofocus system that is designed to recognize human movements, poses and all sorts of different body parts to anticipate how the subject might move, and it also tracks subjects like cars, trains, planes, animals and insects. We weren't sure how they could improve on the A7R IV, which used to sit in this place on this list, but we think this new model has blown it out of the water. The new Sony A7R V is a breath of fresh air in the photography world. □ Sony A7R V: The Sony A7R V builds on the power of its predecessor with its higher resolution EVF and LCD screen, more stops of image stabilization and a new AI autofocus unit, but the massive 61MP sensor provides too much noise for astrophotography. ★★★★½ It's simply the best camera body on the market right now - it performs so well across the board we can't think of another camera that matches its versatile prowess. This is an incredible camera, and you can read more of our thoughts in our gushing Nikon Z8 review. Keep in mind, though, that this camera is quite big and heavy to hold.įor astrophotographers, Nikon has even included a night vision mode that dims the rear screen and electronic viewfinder and displays red pixels. Additionally, it excels at handling noise, and it can take photos rapidly at 120FPS, which is great for indoor sports, concerts, weddings and similar events. This camera can shoot both videos and still photos equally well - it can capture high-quality video formats like N-Log, ProRes, and Raw HQ data. It is the perfect blend of 'all the good bits' of the incredible Nikon D850 DSLR and Nikon's flagship Nikon Z9. Wow, what can we say - this is the go-to camera for professionals who earn a living from their photography and shoot a range of styles or enthusiastic casual shooters with a sizeable budget (around $5500) to play with. □ Nikon Z8: Professionals need to look no further - if you combined all the best parts of the flagship Nikon Z9 and the best DSLR in the world, the Nikon D850, you'd be left with this heavy-hitter the Nikon Z8. ★★★★★ ![]() If you've already purchased your camera and are now looking for accessories like one of the best camera backpacks or a travel tripod, or perhaps you're looking to pair it with one of the best lenses for astrophotography or the best zoom lenses, we have guides for all of those as well. Without being able to rely on a historically weaker West Division, the Wildcats face an uphill battle to be one of the two best teams in an 18-team conference - what it’ll take to have the chance to play for a conference championship. The ‘Cats won their only meeting in program history against the Ducks but are 0-3 all-time against the Huskies. Although the new model was supposed to strip the conference of the West and East divisions, especially if the conference continues to expand, it may make logistical sense to create a West Coast division to cut down on travel and keep those rivalries in place.įor Northwestern specifically, Washington and Oregon’s arrival only further crowds the competitive field. It is possible that the conference could re-implement some sort of division structure. The schedule-makers will have to find a format that maintains rivalries, limits the amount of cross-country trips and ensures that teams will play one another with some regularity. However, this would take away annual rivalries such as Michigan-Michigan State with only Michigan-Ohio State being able to be protected. This would still allow for each team to host every other opponent in the conference once every four years, ensuring matchups once every two seasons. The remaining sixteen teams would be split into two, with eight more games each year to fill out the nine-game conference gauntlet. The Big Ten may have to implement a plan that gives each team one protected rival to play every season. The current “flex protect plus” model, which allowed for each team to have up to three protected rivals and guaranteed that each team would play a home and away matchup against every program in a four-year span, no longer works. The conference’s 20 schedule, which had already been announced, will have to be revised to account for the two new additions. ![]() In terms of logistics, the Big Ten, now clearly a mega-conference, could realistically field as many as five playoff teams in the expanded 12-team playoff format which will begin in 2024 - the same year all four West Coast teams will join the conference. Even Washington-Penn State, which seems exciting on paper, will not draw the same fervent passion as the annual Apple Cup and the geographic rivalry that those two schools have built. Instead we will get matchups like Oregon-Maryland and Oregon-Rutgers, who have never played each other in program history. Although both schools have indicated they intend to keep state rivalries intact, the loss of Oregon-Oregon State and Washington-Washington State on the conference schedule, matchups that have faced off 126 and 114 times, respectively, is a major blow. Traditional rivalries also become a casualty of the new conference structure. ![]() In a few years, it’s possible that nobody will care about regional identities as they continue to tune into exciting Oregon-Michigan matchups, but for diehard college football plans, this loss is notable. ![]() The Big Ten was run-first, physical and gritty while the Big 12 featured high-flying offenses and exorbitant point totals. One of the biggest draws to college football was how each conference and each region had it’s own distinct style of play. The Big Ten covers coast to coast, the new Big 12 stretches from Orlando to Salt Lake City, and rumors of Cal and Stanford joining the ACC would destroy the “Atlantic Coast” element of the “Atlantic Coast Conference.” Ultimately, this move is not the “death of college sports” like some pundits claim, but the situation is complex and, unsurprisingly, motivated by money.įor starters, the days of conferences being regional entities are gone. The announcement rattled the college sports landscape like a West Coast earthquake, and with a few dominoes still left to fall, it remains to be seen just how widespread the ramifications will be. After the additions of USC and UCLA, the conference now stands at 18 programs and is a true national grouping, spanning from Seattle and Los Angeles to Piscataway and College Park. After the departure of Utah, Arizona and Arizona State to the Big 12, it was announced on Friday that Washington and Oregon would be joining the Big Ten. Wood that sparks heavily can create significant fire hazards, which can cause problems in both open-air (e.g. Some types of firewood pop or spark really badly, which may not seem like an issue at first, but it can actually be a big problem. Jump down to this section to learn more about seasoning. High smoke production may also be a sign that wood is not fully dried, and you want to make sure that you’re always properly seasoning your wood before burning it. On the other hand, some of our favorite firewoods like Hickory and Oak, create low levels of smoke. Similar to Hard Maple, Pine is also a firewood that produces a lot of smoke. Hard Maples (like Sugar Maple) are known to produce a lot of smoke, but Soft Maple produces much less smoke. This one is interesting, because in this area, Soft Maple is better than Hard Maple. There are a few other factors, that will affect how good the wood is for heating or for outdoor campfires. Heat output is definitely an important characteristic for firewood, but it’s not the only thing that matters. (Note: data sources are mentioned beneath the infographic above). Check out the table below to see a more data-driven comparison of the heat output for 15 common firewood species’.īoth types of Maple are marked with bold text below. To give you a clearer view of this, I compiled some side-by-side numbers. However, Soft Maple is TERRIBLE when it comes to heating. When it comes to heat output, Hard Maple is not bad, and it’s pretty close to Ash and Mulberry which both burn very hot. ![]() Let’s go! The 6 Burn Qualities of Maple 1. That gives you an idea of where Hard Maple and Soft Maple are in comparison to other types of firewood, and in the following section, we’ll highlight 6 important considerations for burning Maple firewood. In addition, where there was missing data (only a few occasions), I’ve used my own experience to round out the data. The information in this image is based largely off of data from the following sources: Utah State University Forestry Extension, Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, University of Illinois Extension, University of Missouri Extension, South Dakota State University Extension. To learn more about the data sources, you can read the note below the image. This ranking is not an arbitrary list, and it’s actually based primarily on data from several university extension offices. The top tier (top of the pyramid) is the absolute best firewood you can burn, whereas the bottom of the pyramid is the firewood that will still produce heat, but is not ideal because of low heat output, excessive smoke, difficulty splitting, or some other reason. To help you get an idea for how Maple compares to other types of firewood, we’ve put together a graphic below, which provides a snapshot of some of the most common types of firewood in our area (in the Midwest USA), and they are divided into 3 levels of quality. Maple is a common type of wood, and both can still be good options, you will just want to know the details below before you throw it in the fire. ![]() Now, when we say soft Maple is “poor”, and Hard Maple is just “moderately good”, does that mean you shouldn’t use them? No! Hard Maple is denser than Soft Maple and produces a higher heat output. ![]() Hard Maple is moderately good firewood, and Soft Maple is poor firewood. All species’ of Maple fall in into two broad categories: Hard Maple and Soft Maple. Maple firewood ranges from poor to moderately good firewood.
